The LTV-817-A from Lite-On is a single-channel transistor output optocoupler in a 4-pin DIP through-hole package. The A suffix denotes the A-grade CTR range of 80% to 160% at IF=5mA, VCE=5V. The device couples an infrared LED on the input side to a phototransistor on the output side through an optically transparent isolation barrier rated at 5000Vrms. The 80-160% CTR provides adequate signal transfer for common feedback and isolation applications. The 4us response time and 0.1V low VCE(sat) make it suitable for switching power supply optocoupler feedback loops. The LTV-817-A is pin-compatible with the industry-standard PC817A, offering a second-source alternative with equivalent performance.

The LTV-817-A operates through three subsystems: (1) Input LED: An infrared GaAs LED emits light when forward current (IF) flows through it. The typical forward voltage is 1.2V at IF=20mA. The LED can be driven from DC, AC (with a reverse-parallel diode), or pulsed sources. The maximum continuous forward current is 50mA. (2) Isolation Barrier: A transparent dielectric provides optical coupling between the LED and phototransistor while maintaining 5000Vrms electrical isolation. This galvanic isolation protects the low-voltage side from high-voltage transients and breaks ground loops in mixed-signal systems. (3) Output Phototransistor: A silicon NPN phototransistor detects the LED emission and generates a collector current proportional to the LED current. The ratio of output current to input current is the Current Transfer Ratio (CTR), specified as 80% to 160% for the A-grade. The phototransistor operates with VCE up to 35V and collector current up to 50mA. The VCE(sat) of 0.1V at IC=1mA provides low output voltage in saturation.
