The LM2676S-5.0 from Texas Instruments is a SIMPLE SWITCHER step-down voltage regulator providing a fixed 5.0V output at up to 3A from an 8V to 40V input. The device integrates a 150mOhm DMOS power switch and all necessary control circuitry, requiring only 5 external components (input capacitor, bootstrap capacitor, catch diode, inductor, and output capacitor) for a complete step-down regulator design. The 260kHz fixed-frequency oscillator allows the use of physically small inductors and capacitors. Efficiency reaches up to 94% at full load, significantly reducing thermal management requirements. The output voltage tolerance is maintained at +/-2% over all line, load, and temperature conditions. An ON/OFF control pin allows the regulator to be shut down to a 50uA standby current. Internal thermal shutdown and current limiting protect the device during fault conditions. The TO-263 (KTW) surface-mount package provides excellent thermal performance with a low junction-to-case thermal resistance.

The LM2676S-5.0 uses a current-mode buck regulator topology with an integrated DMOS power switch. (1) Current-Mode Control: An internal oscillator generates a 260kHz clock. Each clock cycle, the high-side DMOS switch turns on and current through the inductor ramps up. A current sense comparator monitors the switch current and terminates the on-time when the peak current reaches the error amplifier output level. (2) Output Regulation: The internal resistor divider samples the output voltage and compares it with a 2.21V internal reference. The error amplifier adjusts the peak current setpoint to maintain 5V output regulation. (3) DMOS Switch: The 150mOhm N-channel DMOS transistor provides the power switching function. A bootstrap circuit (CB capacitor) generates the gate drive voltage above VIN for the high-side switch. (4) Catch Diode: An external Schottky diode conducts the inductor current during the switch off-time. The diode must have a reverse voltage rating above VIN and a forward current rating above IOUT. (5) Shutdown: When the ON/OFF pin is pulled below 1.4V, the regulator enters standby mode with 50uA supply current. When floating or driven above 2.0V, normal operation resumes.
