The KP3211SGA is a primary-side regulation (PSR) LED driver IC from Kiwi Instruments, designed for offline constant-current LED lighting applications. By sensing the output current through the primary-side flyback waveform, it eliminates the need for an optocoupler and secondary feedback components, reducing BOM cost and improving reliability. The device operates in both constant-current (CC) and constant-voltage (CV) modes, making it suitable for LED driving and battery charging applications. Built-in active PFC achieves power factor greater than 0.9, meeting IEC 61000-3-2 harmonic requirements. The ±3% LED current accuracy ensures consistent brightness across production units. Comprehensive protection features including over-voltage, over-current, over-temperature, and LED open/short protection ensure safe operation under fault conditions.

The KP3211 uses primary-side regulation to control the flyback converter output without direct secondary-side feedback. During the MOSFET off-time, the magnetizing inductance of the transformer discharges energy to the secondary side. The primary-side auxiliary winding reflects the output voltage; by sampling this voltage at the right moment (when the secondary current reaches zero — discontinuous conduction mode), the IC accurately determines the output voltage. The output current is calculated from the peak primary current (sensed through an external sense resistor) and the discharge time. The CC loop maintains constant average LED current by controlling the peak current and switching frequency. The CV loop takes over when the load is removed, preventing output voltage from rising above the OVP threshold. Active PFC is achieved by shaping the input current to follow the input voltage waveform.

  • LED Bulb Driver (7W): Design a compact 7W LED bulb driver using the KP3211 in a boundary-conduction-mode flyback. The primary-side regulation eliminates the optocoupler, reducing component count and board area to fit within the bulb base. The built-in PFC ensures compliance with energy regulations. Set LED current via the CS pin sense resistor.
  • LED Tube Light (T8, 18W): Use the KP3211 for a high-PF T8 tube driver. The CV mode provides safe output limiting during open-load conditions (when the tube is removed). The LED short-circuit protection prevents thermal runaway if individual LEDs fail short. The frequency jittering feature reduces EMI filter requirements.
  • Battery Charger (CC/CV): Leverage the dual CC/CV mode for lithium-ion battery charging. The CC mode charges the battery at a constant rate until it reaches the voltage threshold, then the CV mode maintains the voltage as current tapers. The OVP feature prevents overcharging if the battery is disconnected during the CV phase.
