The AD8226ARZ is a low-cost, wide-supply-range instrumentation amplifier from Analog Devices that requires only one external resistor to set any gain from 1 to 1000. Its wide input range extends below the negative supply, enabling single-supply amplification of near-ground signals without level shifting. The rail-to-rail output maximizes dynamic range. Input protection tolerates voltages up to ±35V beyond the supply rails (with ±5V supplies), making it robust in industrial environments with transient overvoltages. The minimum gain of 1 allows direct handling of ±10V signals without attenuation. With only 350µA supply current and operation from 2.2V to 36V, the AD8226 suits both battery-powered portables and industrial 24V systems. Open-wire detection is facilitated by specified minimum and maximum input bias currents.

The AD8226 uses an indirect current-feedback architecture. Unlike traditional three-op-amp in-amps, the input stage converts the differential input voltage to a current through a transconductance amplifier. This current is mirrored to the output stage where it is converted back to a voltage through a feedback amplifier. The gain-setting resistor RG determines the transconductance ratio: G = 1 + (49.4kΩ/RG). The indirect current-feedback topology provides several advantages: the input common-mode range is independent of the gain and reference voltage, the output can swing rail-to-rail, and the input can extend below the negative supply. The input protection uses series resistors and clamp diodes to tolerate voltages well beyond the supply rails without damage. The REF pin adds a DC offset to the output, useful for level-shifting in single-supply applications.

  • Single-Supply Bridge Amplifier: Connect a 350Ω load cell excited by 5V to the AD8226 powered from a single 5V supply. The input range extends below ground, so the bridge output near 2.5V common-mode is well within range. Set G=100 with RG = 499Ω. The rail-to-rail output swings from near 0V to near 5V, maximizing ADC dynamic range. The ±35V input overvoltage protects against ESD and miswiring during installation.
  • 24V Industrial 4-20mA Loop Receiver: Use the AD8226 to sense the voltage across a precision shunt resistor in a 4-20mA current loop. The 36V maximum supply allows direct operation from the 24V loop supply. The input below-ground capability handles ground-loop offsets. The 90dB CMRR rejects common-mode noise on the loop.
  • Multi-Channel Portable Data Acquisition: At only 350µA per channel, eight AD8226 channels draw less than 3mA total — negligible in a battery-powered data logger. The MSOP package option (AD8226ARMZ) saves board space. The specified minimum bias current allows detection of open sensor wires by monitoring for zero bias current.
