The ACPL-M50L-000E is a 1MBd optocoupler from Broadcom in SO-5 (SOP-5) with logic-gate output and 50-300% CTR at 5mA LED current. The input LED emits infrared light at 850nm wavelength. The photodetector IC on the output side integrates a photodiode, transimpedance amplifier, Schmitt trigger, and open-collector/open-emitter output stage. The Schmitt trigger provides clean switching with hysteresis, making the output immune to LED output degradation over time. The split output configuration (VOL open-collector, VOH open-emitter) allows wired-OR connections for active-LOW or active-HIGH logic. The VE (Output Enable) pin allows tri-stating the output for bus sharing. At 5mA LED current, the CTR of 50-300% ensures reliable switching even at end-of-life LED degradation. The 1MBd data rate supports 500kBaud asynchronous communication. Propagation delay is typically 0.5us. The SO-5 footprint (5.1×4.0mm) is 60% smaller than DIP-6, critical for space-constrained designs. Applications include digital logic isolation, power supply feedback, and communication line isolation.
