Each of the four gates performs the NAND function (output LOW only when both inputs are HIGH) with Schmitt-trigger input hysteresis. The hysteresis means the positive-going threshold (VT+) is higher than the negative-going threshold (VT-), typically VT+ = 5.5V and VT- = 3.8V at 10V VDD. This hysteresis makes the device immune to slow input edges and noise: a slowly rising input must exceed VT+ to switch the output, and a slowly falling input must drop below VT- to switch back. This is invaluable for debouncing mechanical switches, squaring up slow signals from sensors, and creating RC oscillators. The NAND Schmitt trigger can also function as an oscillator by connecting the output through an RC network to the input.
