This reference voltage drives a constant current through the external resistor R1 (typically 240 Ohm) from VOUT to ADJ. The ADJ pin draws a very small quiescent current (50 uA typical), which also flows through the second resistor R2 from ADJ to ground. The output voltage is calculated as VOUT = 1.25V x (1 + R2\/R1) + IADJ x R2. Since IADJ is typically 50 uA, its contribution is negligible for most designs. The internal error amplifier compares the 1.25 V reference with the voltage across R1 and adjusts the pass transistor to maintain regulation. The thermal shutdown circuit monitors junction temperature and shuts down the pass transistor above approximately 170C.
