Unlike conventional LDOs that use a voltage-reference-and-feedback-divider architecture, the LT3086 uses a current-source reference: a precision 50uA current flows out of the SET pin through an external resistor RSET to ground. The output voltage is VOUT = 50uA x RSET. This architecture eliminates the feedback divider noise and allows VOUT to go to 0V (unlike fixed-reference LDOs limited to the reference voltage). The IMON pin provides an analog voltage proportional to load current for monitoring without a sense resistor. The ITH pin allows external compensation and sets the current limit via an external resistor. Multiple LT3086 devices can be paralleled by tying SET pins together and using ballast resistors on each output, enabling >2.1A output.
