Unlike conventional PN-junction diodes, the Schottky diode uses a metal-semiconductor junction (typically chromium or platinum silicide on N-type silicon) that eliminates minority carrier storage. This results in two key advantages: a very low forward voltage drop (0.43V typical at 1A) which minimizes conduction losses, and near-zero reverse recovery time since there are no stored minority carriers to recombine.
