The device remains in this state as long as the current stays below the 50mA hold current. (2) When an overcurrent event exceeds the 100mA trip current, the I2R heating of the PPTC element causes the polymer matrix to expand, breaking the conductive carbon black chains. This transitions the device to a high-resistance state (up to 20 Ohms), which limits the fault current to a safe level. The trip time is approximately 5 seconds at 5x the hold current. (3) After the fault is removed and power is disconnected, the PPTC element cools and the polymer matrix contracts, re-establishing the conductive pathways. The device returns to its low-resistance state automatically, ready for the next overcurrent event.
