The dropout voltage is the minimum input-to-output differential required for regulation, determined by the VCE(sat) of the PNP pass transistor plus the ballast resistor voltage drop. At 800 mA, this is typically 1.1 V. The internal current limit circuit senses the voltage across a ballast resistor and reduces the pass transistor drive when the current exceeds approximately 1.2 A.
