When V+ > V-, the output transistor turns off and the open-collector output floats HIGH (via external pull-up resistor). When V+ < V-, the output transistor turns on and pulls the output LOW. Unlike op-amps, comparators have no internal compensation capacitor, providing much faster response (1.3us vs microseconds for op-amps). However, the lack of compensation means the LM393 cannot be used with negative feedback (it would oscillate). Positive feedback (hysteresis) can be added with a resistor from output to non-inverting input to prevent oscillation near the switching threshold.
