During the positive half-cycle of AC input, the diode is forward biased and conducts, charging the filter capacitor. During the negative half-cycle, the diode is reverse biased and blocks, preventing discharge of the capacitor back through the source. The 1000V reverse voltage rating provides ample margin for 240VAC rectification (peak of 340V).
